US President Bush Backs Bulgaria's EU Entry

The US is supporting Bulgaria's entry into the European Union (EU), it appeared from a letter by US President George Bush sent to his Bulgarian counterpart Georgi Parvanov. US Ambassador John Beyrle handed the letter to President Parvanov on Friday. The EU enlargement has an important role for the implementation of the democracy principles and for Europe's prosperity and I strongly support Bulgaria's entry, Bush wrote in the letter. The letter also reads that the reforms that will be undertaken in Bulgaria will establish "favourable climate for investments" that would help the bilateral relations, the president press centre announced. The president press centre also revealed that Parvanov has received a letter from French President Jacques Chirac in which he voices his country's support to Bulgaria and Romania timely EU entry.

Bulgaria's Constitutional Court Celebrates 15th "Birthday"

Bulgaria's Constitutional Court marks 15 years of its establishment with a special international conference. The conference was attended by Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov, Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev as well as judges from the supreme courts of over 27 countries and members of the Court of Justice of the European Communities and European Court of Human Rights. I believe that in future the Constitutional court would remain one of the pillars of the constitutional system and democracy in Bulgaria, President Parvanov said in his speech. The prime minister also greeted the judges from the Constitutional Court pointing out that it is one of the most efficient instruments for the implementation of the law.

Bulgaria Sees New BGN 50 Banknote

Bulgaria will put into circulation a new banknote with nominal of BGN 50 as of July 3 to add to one of the most widely used banknotes in the country. The news emerged during a press conference of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB). The new banknote has additional protection elements including a hidden image of the figure 50. The image of the famous Bulgarian poet Pencho Slaveykov is printed on the banknote. It is also customised for use by ill-sighted people. BNB experts explained that they picked a banknote with nominal of BGN 50 as the it is one of the most widely used banknotes. The banknotes with that nominal are also among the most frequently falsified, BNB added. BNB cashier Stefan Tsvetkov explained that additional protective elements will also be introduced to other Bulgarian banknotes.

Bulgarian Telco Top Taxpayer of 2005

The Bulgarian Telecommunications Company (BTC) emerged to be winner in the 2005 contest of top taxpayer. The awarding is organised annually by the National Revenues Agency to recognize the country's largest natural and legal persons filling in the exchequer. Second came winner 2004 - oil giant LukOil Neftochim, followed by Maritsa East Mines. Bulgaria to start concession procedure for Ruse airport in Aug

An advisory committee will be formed next week to draft a proposal for the award of a concession contract for the Ruse airport, on the Danube, said Bulgarian transport minister Petar Mutafchiev. The government is expected flag off the procedure in early August, said the official, estimating that it would be completed in about 12 to 14 months. The Ruse airport, designed and operated as a military facility until 1996, has one runway measuring 2,500 m by 50 m. Another public infrastructure facility in Ruse that is facing a concession procedure if the local river port.
